van|guard «VAN GAHRD», noun.
1. the front part of an army; soldiers marching ahead of the main part of an army to clear the way and guard against surprise.
2. Figurative. a) the foremost or leading position, usually in intellectual and political movements or social reforms. b) the leaders of a movement, especially persons who experiment or work with new ideas.
[Middle English vantgarde < Old French avangarde < avant before (< Vulgar Latin abante < Latin ab from + ante before) + garde guard. Compare etym. under avant-garde. (Cf.avant-garde)]
